GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATIONS |
||
The term of epoxide indicate three membered cyclic ether (also called oxirane or or alkylene oxide) in which an oxygen atom is joined to each of two carbon atoms that are already bonded to each other. The unhindered oxygen atom carries two unshared pairs of electrons - a structure which favors the formation of coordination complexes and the solvation of cations. Because of equilateral triangle strain in this small ring, epoxides are more reactive than larger ring ethers. Epoxides undergo reactions such as C–O bond cleavage, nucleophilic addition, hydrolysis and reduction under mild conditions and more rapidly than other ethers. Epoxides are formed by some oxidation reactions of alkenes with peracids. Common epoxidized oleochemicals are ESO(epoxidized soybean oil) and ELO(epoxidized linseed oil). They are epoxidized glycerol fatty esters. Epoxy functionalized oleochemicals are used as plasticizer and stabilizer in plastic materials especially for PVC and its copolymers to keep plastics and rubber soft and pliable. The epoxy functionality provides excellent heat and light stability. They are replacing for DOP (dioctyl phthalate) due to its biodegradability over traditional phthalate plasticizers. They are also used as pigment dispersion agents and acid/mercaptan scavenging agents and epoxy reactive diluents. Epoxide substances are used as raw materials for various applications including functional fluids, fuel additives, polyol replacements, agricultural and pharmaceutical molecules, flavor & fragrances, reactive diluents in cationic and UV cure applications, surfactants, adhesives, sealants, coatings, and special inks. | ||
